Late Fragment by Raymond Carver

Late Fragment
by Raymond Carver

And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

I love this little poem so much, and thought about it a great deal at the end of my last marriage. I did feel like I was still beloved, and had the experiencing of it. This is the closing poem of A New Path to the Waterfall, Raymond Carver’s final book, written as he was dying of lung cancer at fifty.
